Lt Col Eugene Thorn joined CAP in 1953 as a Cadet
in the Grafton Composite Squadron. In
1959 he became a Senior member and in 1960 formed the Taylor County Cadet
Squadron where he served as its Commander until 1968, at which time he
became the Commander of WV Wing’s Group 3. Lt
Col Thorn served in that capacity for two years.
At that time, Groups were changed to Area Task Forces and Lt Col
Thorn served in the capacity of Task Force Commander until 1974 when he
joined WV Wing Staff as an assistant to the Emergency Services Officer.
Following
his service on Wing Staff, he once again commanded the Taylor County Cadet
Squadron until such time as that unit was merged with the Clarksburg
Composite Squadron, in 1978. Lt
Col Thorn served as the squadron's Emergency Services Officer and later in
1988 became the Squadron Commander. In
1992, he relinquished the command and once again became the Squadron’s
ES Officer.
Lt
Col Thorn was transferred to WV Wing Staff as the Director of Logistics in
1997 and held that position until 2001 when he became the Director of
Emergency Services for the WV Wing.
Lt Col Thorn lives in Grafton, WV with his wife (also a CAP Member) and is one of only two West Virginia Wing members to achieve 50 years of continuous membership in Civil Air Patrol.
